Showtime Boxing Airs Gary Russell Jr’s Latest Defense – Showtime Boxing and the Premier Boxing Champions are at the MGM National Theater in Oxon Hill, Maryland this Saturday night for WBC world featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr’s latest title defense. Russell Jr (27-1) will be facing off against rugged Colombian Oscar Escandon (25-2)  in what will be Russell Jr’s first fight in more than a year.

This match is a showcase for Russell Jr, who is fighting close to his hometown of Washington DC as he is looking to put a layoff of over a year behind him. He last fought in April of 2015 when he outclassed Ireland’s Patrick Hyland, stopping him in two rounds. This match with Escandon was originally slated for March of this year but the bout was postponed because Escandon had a bad back. For Escandon the layoff dates back to March of 2016 when he stopped Robinson Castellano in seven rounds. Before that, he llogged just one fight in 2015 and that was a loss to unbeaten prospect Moises Flores. At 32 years of age, Escandon knows he may not get another title shot at this point as his two career losses have come in bids for interim belts. Escandon is hoping the third title shot is the charm here but he faces a tall order against the high skill Russell Jr.

Undefeated former super featherweight and lightweight world champion Rance Barthelemy will move up to super lightweight to test the waters against tough Kiryl Relikh. An interim IBF super middleweight belt will be on the line between Andre Dirrell (25-2) and Jose Uzcategui (26-1) and that fight could also pop up at the books as we get closer to fight time. Check local listings for start times on Showtime.
