March Madness Orlando Regional Day 1 – Thursday afternoon sees the NCAA’s March madness tournament get started with action in all the regions. Down south, Orlando hosts a trio of games at the Amway Center.

The Florida Gators get to defend the home state as the #4 seed plays #13 Easter Tennessee State Buccaneers. The Bucs count on putting points on the board as they are offensive oriented. Meanwhile the Gators bring a stout defense to the table so the match-up is set. The Gators went 24-8 on the year but three of those losses came to the Vanderbilt team, including in the conference tournament final.

The Florida State Seminoles enter as a #3 seed against the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, who did finish a strong 26-7 on the regular season. The Seminoles won’t likely need the home cooking for this one but the region will get hard in a hurry here.

The #6 seed Maryland Terrapins take on the #11 seed Xavier Musketeers in the third game at the Amway Center. An interesting stat to ponder for this one is that the Terrapins have advanced past the first round of the tournament in their last twelve appearances.

March Madness Orlando Regional Day 1

Interestingly, Florida and Florida State are both in this region so there is the potential for in-state rivalries to heat the games up even further. It isn’t football, but a Gators vs Seminoles match-up in basketball’s glamour tourrnament would get a lot of attention.
