Virginia Visits Virginia Tech in Sunday Hoops – The 17-5 Virginia Cavaliers are ranked #12 in the current AP Polls as they pay an in-state visit to the 16-7 Virginia Tech Hokies.
The two teams met on February 1st on the Cavaliers home court and the Virginia team put a solid 71-48 beating on the Hokies. The Cavs are 1-1 since that game, falling to Syracuse but picking up a strong 71-55 over #4 ranked Louisville back on Monday.
The Hokies had a strong eight game winning streak earlier in the season that saw them upend then #5 ranked Duke, but they are 4-6 in the ten games after the streak. Leading scorer Zach LeDay has been especially inconsistent recently, averaging just over 10 PPG over their last four outings. That is a bad sign for the Hokies, who need to score with the Cavaliers to keep up. The fact is that the Hokie defense is not that good ans stopping Virginia is a tall order.
After losing Marcus Brogdon, Mike Tobey and Anthony Gill this was supposed to be a reset year for the Cavaliers but senior point guard London Perrantes has led a well balanced, high point output attack all year long. Perrantes is the only Cavalier averaging over 30 minutes a game but the team that has won two ACC titles in a row is now looking at another deep run. They cannot look past these conference rivals, as the Hokies are still a capable opponent.
For a taste of wht the Cav defense can do to the Hokies, look no further than their meeting just two weeks ago.
