We haven’t had a CFL play for awhile—we passed on a couple of unattractive games last week. We’ve got another two game schedule this week as the league cycles through their bye weeks but both matchups are very interesting from a competitive standpoint. This one, at least, also offers an attractive wagering position as we look to improve on our 17-4 ATS record in Canadian football this season.
HAMILTON TIGER CATS AT WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS 5:00 PM PACIFIC
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have the CFL’s best defense and are 6-1 SU/7-0 ATS. Despite this impressive showing, they’re still not getting the respect they deserve from linesmakers. In our last CFL release we backed Winnipeg as they traveled to Vancouver and easily beat the BC Lions as +1′ point underdogs. They’re now favored as they host the up and down Hamilton Tiger Cats at Canad Inns Stadium.
There’s definitely a lot to like about the visiting Tiger-Cats. They’ve started playing solid football after a slow start and boast an impressive 1-2 punch with quarterback Kevin Glenn and running back Avon Coubourne. They had a little more trouble with provincial rival Toronto in their last game, winning 39-32 but in the big picture that doesn’t concern us much. These games are always fiercely contested regardless of the records of the teams at the time.
In terms of offense, these teams play a very similar style favoring a run oriented ball control attack. The Bombers will counter with the rapidly improving Buck Pierce who looks better week after week. Pierce’s accuracy is improving and a solid running back in Fred Reid and a quarterback that limits mistakes is a very dangerous combination. Winnipeg also has a very strong kicking game and steady PK Justin Palardy could be the difference in this game.
Hamilton has been a very strong play as an underdog in recent years. Since 2009 the Ti-Cats are 16-9 ATS as an underdog, 12-9 ATS on the road and 16-11 ATS in revenge spots. The latter statistic comes into play here by virtue of Winnipeg’s July 1 victory over Hamilton as +7 road underdogs. Given what has transpired since then we’re surprised the price on the Blue Bombers isn’t higher here. The Bombers are just 3-8 ATS in their last 11 as a favorite which may have something to do with it but have made money at Canad Inns Stadium going 13-9 ATS.
The teams’ offenses match up well but the Bombers’ nasty defense is no fluke. Hamilton is no slouch on that side of the ball either and is especially strong at the linebacker position but until Winnipeg gives us a reason to think otherwise we consider them the class of the league. The exceptional Winnipeg kicking game could also make the difference and allow the Bombers to cash in stalled drives.
We look for the Blue Bombers to keep their dream season going this week as they win by a touchdown or more over a less well rounded Hamilton team.
