Online Gambling: Gambling Ban Hits Home for Russians
Differencing opinions about this law have created a mixture of reasoning as to how this enactment is both good and bad for Russia. Those supporting the ban are primarily the poor and the elders claiming those running the casinos and gambling halls were dealing shady business practices. They also believe it will help those with serious addictions.
On the other side of the coin, those against the ban are stating that similar to the Prohibition in the United States, casinos and gambling halls could be pushed underground making them harder if not impossible to regulate.
Russia is plummeting head first into an economic crisis, and the loss of over $1 billion in legal tax revenues is cause for concern with many. However, Russia will allow four new gambling zones in remote districts. These areas will allow gambling, however are not developed and are out of the realm of most to reach easily and regularly.
Russian officials are hoping that a “Las Vegas†style tourist setting will grow out of these four areas. Providing people a place to gamble that is accessible within the countr y, however not right outside their back door.
Watching history repeat itself is a challenge for many as they see the consequences of previous attempts to ban the pastimes of citizens in a country. One is left to wonder, should Russia take heed from the United States’ attempt at prohibition, or should they blaze forward into this with no worries of recourse?
