C logoEOG Sports Betting Preview: San Diego Chargers vs. New York Giants

The top two quarterbacks in the 2004 NFL Draft will get it on in the Meadowlands on Sunday afternoon in a crucial Week 9 betting battle.  QB Philip Rivers will lead his San Diego Chargers (4-3, 2-5 ATS) into this contest against QB Eli Manning and the New York Giants (5-3, 4-3-1 ATS).  Playoff implications will be on the line in this NFL wagering clash.  The Chargers come into this week two games behind the Broncos in the AFC West and behind the Ravens, Bengals, and Texans in the AFC Wild Card chase.  After starting the year at 5-0, the Giants have lost three straight games and will fall two games in the loss column behind the winner of the Philadelphia/Dallas game if they are to lose on Sunday.

San Diego betting fans had to be encouraged by their team's 37-7 NFL wagering battle against the Chiefs two weeks ago, but had to be equally spooked by the fact that the Bolts only beat the lowly Raiders 24-16 last week.  The Chargers may not have beaten the football gambling line against Oakland, but they sure did dominate the statistics.  They only conceded 180 yards of offense and picked up five sacks on the day. After allowing Denver to rack up over 320 yards of 'O' three weeks ago, the Bolts have only allowed a total of 383 yards in their L/2 combined.  San Diego's passing game will test the Giants' secondary, as Rivers paces the #4 passing attack in the NFL at 276.3 yards per game.

What's wrong with New York right now?  All of a sudden, the Giants can barely figure out how to stay in a game let alone how to win one.  NFL wagering fanatics have watched the defense that used to rank #1 in the game by a boatload allow a total of 112 points in the L/3 weeks.  Perhaps this is a case of scheduling catching up to the G-Men.  Their four of their five wins came against the worst teams in the NFL: Washington, Tampa Bay, Kansas City, and Oakland.  They're just 1-3 SU and ATS against teams that are above .500 this season.

The oddsmakers are still showing faith in the hosts in this one in spite of their three-game losing streak.  The Giants have been tabbed as 4.5-point favorites on the NFL gambling line, while the football wagering 'total' has been set at a lofty 48.
