Floyd Landis and Justin Gatlin - Drugs, Doping, Addressed Today By Andre Agassi
August 1, 2006
Floyd Landis and Justin Gatlin can't seem to stay out of the news lately, as Andre Agassi wants the governing bodies to work harder and keep drugs away from athletes.
The New York Times reported Monday that tests on Landis' "A" sample show some of the testosterone in his system was synthetic, putting his defense into question. The report cited a person at the UCI with knowledge of the result.
Further tests and results to confirm or deny cheating by the Tour De France winner are expected to be released on Saturday.
Agassi states, “You can't control everybody. But you can control the integrity of your sport,” You can't count on all the decisions every individual athlete makes as good for the sport as a whole. You can make it so if bad decisions are made; a light is shined on it.”
Agassi also said that he doubts public faith in sport will be shaken by the doping revelations, which in America are accompanied by the long-running saga of steroid allegations against baseball star Barry Bonds. “I tend to give people more credit than that,” Agassi said. “The sport has to have a lot of integrity to it. That doesn't happen so much with athletes. That falls with the governing bodies. Our sport has the highest standard of drug testing there is,” Agassi said. “If you cheat in our sport, it’s a factor of when you get caught, not if you will. That’s what we have to hope everybody is accountable to.”
Personally, I don't feel comfortable when a cry baby like Agassi has been lectures us, do you?
