The Detroit Tigers (6-3) and Kansas City Royals (3-6) will begin a three-game American League Central series on Monday night inside Kauffman Stadium, with the first pitch scheduled for 8:10 ET

The Detroit Tigers are heavy road favorites against the Kansas City Royals on Monday night

Detroit ended its two-game losing streak by picking up a 5-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, as the team continues a six-game trip tonight in Kansas City.  The Tigers are 3-0 in the early going against left-handed starting pitchers, while the “under” is 3-0 in those contests.  Tonight’s game will be just the third time the team has been a road favorite of -175 or more since 2010, with the club winning all three of those games.

Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander (0-1, 2.20 ERA) is still looking for his first victory of the season after winning the 2011 AL Cy Young Award.  The right-hander was cruising through eight innings in his last effort, only to allow four runs in the final frame and end up dropping a 4-2 home contest to the Tampa Bay Rays.  In 19 career starts versus the Royals, Verlander is a dominating 13-2 with a 2.40 ERA, as opposing hitters have hit just .214 against him.

Kansas City was swept in a three-game home series against the Cleveland Indians over the weekend, with all three games flying “over” the posted total.  The Royals have lost four games in a row overall and have allowed 37 combined runs over that span.  “The first time around the rotation, we were the best in baseball,” commented Royals manager Ned Yost.  “The second time around, we’re probably the worst.”  Kansas City is 2-6 as a home underdog of +150 to +175 the last two-plus seasons, while the “under” is 6-2 in those contests.

Royals starting pitcher Danny Duffy (1-0, 0.00 ERA) tallied an impressive 3-0 road victory over the Oakland Athletics in his first start of the season on April 10, allowing just one hit over six scoreless innings.  The left-hander will have a hard time duplicating that effort in facing the Tigers, coming in with an 0-2 mark and 5.63 ERA in three career starts.  Duffy is also just 1-6 with a 5.55 ERA in nine lifetime starts inside tonight’s venue.

Bettors will likely back the Tigers due to their 10-2 mark in Verlander’s last 12 road starts, while the Royals are 2-10 in Duffy’s last 12 starts versus winning teams.

Recommendation: Detroit Tigers -175
