The Denver Nuggets (0-0) and Dallas Mavericks (0-1) are set to face off Monday night inside the American Airlines Center.
Denver Nuggets at Dallas Mavericks
Denver is 10-4 against Dallas in head-to-head matchups since the 2007-08 season, posting a 7-2 record on the road in the series in the last three regular seasons. The Nuggets are set to begin their first full season without star forward Carmelo Anthony, but head coach George Karl is optimistic about his team’s chances. “What we’re trying to do is start where we left off last year and I think we feel now we can get there,” commented Karl this week. Denver is 14-21 ATS versus Southwest opponents the last two years.
The Nuggets have made the playoffs in eight consecutive seasons entering this year and led the NBA in scoring 107.5 points per game. It’s important to note that Denver posted a sensational 44-13 mark when scoring 100-plus points. Denver certainly appeals to the league’s global audience, possessing five international players on its roster. Danilo Gallinari figures to be one of the leaders offensively, averaging 14.7 points in 14 games after being part of the Anthony trade with the New York Knicks.
Dallas certainly saved face by rallying in the fourth quarter in a 105-94 defeat to the Miami Heat as 4.5-point home underdogs, as the final score doesn’t tell the whole story. “We’ve got to get better and it will take a little time to get better,” commented Mavericks forward Lamar Odom. The Mavericks are certainly up against it early in playing a back-to-back to start the season, but the team has tallied an 8-3 ATS mark with zero days rest in its last 11 tries.
The Mavericks were out-rebounded by a 51-31 margin in Sunday’s loss, while having their 14-game regular-season winning streak snapped against the Heat. Guard Jason Terry led the team with 23 points, followed closely by star forward Dirk Nowitzki with 21 points. Dallas has lost 11 of the last 15 regular-season meetings in this series, but is 22-7 in the last 29 matchups inside tonight’s venue. Nowitzki averaged 23.5 points and 8.3 rebounds versus the Nuggets last year.
Bettors will likely back the Nuggets due to their 19-7 ATS mark on the road, while the Mavericks have dropped six consecutive games versus the spread following a double-digit home loss.
Recommendation: Denver Nuggets +5
