Philadelphia Flyers Good start to the NHL season as my EOG posted plays have gone 9-2 +860. Big slate of NHL action on Thursday. Four plays now and I might add some more before gametime tomorrow. If you’re not following me on Twitter you should since that’s where I send ‘late release plays’. I’m @davidglisan on Twitter.

WASHINGTON CAPITALS AT PHILADELPHIA FLYERS—OCTOBER 20, 2011 4:05 PM PACIFIC

One of the marquee matchups of the early NHL season will pit the 5-0-0 Washington Capitals against the 4-0-1 Philadelphia Flyers. Statistically, not much difference between these two teams. Philadelphia has scored 19 goals and allowed 11, Washington has scored 18 and allowed 10. Head to head play in recent years has also been a toss up—last season the Caps and Flyers split four games with each team winning once on enemy ice. Since 2009, they’ve split 4 games in Philadelphia though dating back further Philadelphia holds a 21-11 edge in their own building. I’m going to back the home team in this game for several reasons—Flyers have played tougher opponents so far and I don’t think the market has yet to catch up with just how good a goaltender Philadelphia picked up in Ilya Bryzgalov. Tomas Vokoun is no slouch, but in my view Bryzgalov is better. Flyers are in a tougher division and will need every point—improbably, they’re not even in first place despite their torrid start as they trail the Pittsburgh Penguins by a single point. In the Southeast Division the Caps could quickly run away from the pack unless Carolina and Tampa Bay step up their play soon. Flyers looked lethal in their romp over Ottawa on Tuesday night. Tough scheduling sequence for Washington—this is the only road game amid four home dates and they’ve got a big matchup against Detroit on deck.

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS AT BOSTON BRUINS—OCTOBER 20, 2011 4:05 PM PACIFIC

Why not take a shot on the Maples here? Boston has sputtered coming out of the gate in defense of their Stanley Cup and look like a team struggling to regain the intensity that got them the championship last season. In fact, several Bruins players have publicly lamented their difficulty at getting ‘up’ for these early regular season games. Toronto is off to a good start (3-0-1) but is coming off a loss to Colorado. That was three days ago so they’ll be well rested and the Maple Leafs have given the Bruins fits in their most recent meetings—Toronto has won three straight and four of the last five against Boston including two wins at the TD BankNorth Garden. Undervalued team at a good price.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS AT TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING—OCTOBER 20, 2011 4:35 PM PACIFIC

Tampa a mess right now while the Isles are in good form. Lightning have lost five straight giving up 25 goals in the process. Islanders are a much improved team with a ton of young talent and even last year when they struggled for much of the season had little trouble with Tampa Bay—New York won three of four meetings last season including two in the ‘Cigar City’. They also thrashed Tampa at home earlier this year. No interest in a ‘revenge’ spot due to the Bolts’ shoddy defensive form. I’ll also play this game Over the total thinking the Lightning will win with offense or loss with a lack of defense. Isles have some playmakers as well.
